George Kavanagh was born in Birmingham, England, in 1962 and from a very early age George would draw and take photographs. He graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Graphic and Visual Communications from the University of Wolverhampton in 1986. When he left University he was offered work as a freelance photojournalist in Birmingham and Ireland.
The individual strong quality of the work was noticed, and he was approached by the Independent Newspaper and the Daily Telegraph to work for them. George accepted the commissions and moved to London. This work was predominantly black and white and had a very strong graphic style. George won the prestigious Agfa Black and White Award in 1987. He was The Nikon Press Photographer of the Year in 1988.
George built up a strong portfolio of work over the next 5 years. He began doing project-based editorial location work for the Sunday Magazines of The Independent, Telegraph and The Times. Such magazines provided new sources of talented photographers for the Advertising Industry in London. At the age of 24, George was commissioned to do a global advertising campaign for American Express by Y&R London. This launched George into his commercial photography career. He has worked for all the major advertising agencies and design companies both in London, Europe and America. His clients include Mercedes- Benz, Emirates Airlines, Virgin, Orange Mobile, Vodaphone, Shell, Credit Suisse, National Trust, BP, J.P. Morgan, GAM Bank, Barclays Wealth, Smirnoff, Laphroaig Whisky. George has worked on location in America, Mexico, South America, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, New Zealand, South Africa, Iceland and most of Europe.
George is married and lives in the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, England. He has two children, two dogs and is passionate about fly-fishing.
